Annual Meeting Breakfast - Thursday, October 27th
The Alliance held our fourth Annual Meeting Breakfast on Thursday,
October 27th at the Marriott Courtyard—Billerica.
We were pleased to have three excellent speakers at this year's event. Our keynote speaker this year was Billerica State Representative Marc Lombardo who is completing his first year in office. Marc spoke about his experiences over the past year, life at the state house and his commitment to Billerica.
Billerica Economic Development Coordinator Stephanie Cronin updated the group on local economic development activities including the Middlesex Turnpike, the town center and Boston Road. George Kachen from UMass - Lowell provided information on how the University can partner with local businesses.
Our thanks goes to our speakers as well as Kris Frazee and Tara Norton of the Marriott Courtyard for their hospitality and assistance. We also want to thank our 14 sponsors for this year's event. To learn more about our sponsors, see the Annual Meeting Sponsors page on our website by clicking here.
Grant In Aid Winners
We received 12 applications for this year’s Grant In Aid program. These applications represented a diverse set of programs with benefit to all segments of the community and the funding requested totaled over $13,000. The Alliance is proud to continue this long-standing program of the Billerica Plan which has awarded over $60,000 to local community groups since its inception in 1988. We are pleased to announce this year’s winners:
Billerica Family First Night - ‘Night with the Peanuts Gang’
The 2012 Family First Night has been awarded $500 for their program. First Night activities are intended to offer Billerica children under the age of 10 and their families a fun event focused on New Years traditions. The evening’s activities also teach them about a particular theme, which in 2012 will celebrate Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang. The Family First Night program in Billerica has been in existence since 1999 and expects to have about 1,500 residents participate in this year’s activities.
John F Kennedy School Improvement Council - ‘Learning Garden’
The John F Kennedy School’s Improvement Council has been awarded $500 for their Learning Garden project. The garden, which is to be constructed in the school’s courtyard area, will initially be used as part of the science curriculum for 2nd graders. The garden will include plantings intended to attract butterflies and be a ‘hands on’ part of the 2nd grade curriculum. The hope is to expand, in future years, to the other grades at the school which serves approximately 500 students. The grant funds will go towards the purchase of plants and rain barrels for the garden.
Shawsheen Tech Parent Advisory Council -‘All Night Graduation Party’
The Parent Advisory Council has been awarded $500 for their All Night Graduation 2012 program which provides a safe environment for graduating seniors to celebrate their high school graduation. The event, which has been in place for 16 years, costs approximately $20,000 annually. Roughly one third of the graduating senior class are residents of Billerica. The grant funds will go towards covering the cost of entertainment expenses for the June 2012 event.
We congratulate all of our winners!
Red Sox Ticket Raffle - Winners
We are pleased to announce the winners of our Red Sox Ticket Raffle. We thank all of our members who purchased tickets and congratulate our winners:

Our speaker, Danielle Bergeron, the owner of Frills and Thrills Events and Social Media, once again provided an informative and hands on session which focused on 'Linkedin'. Danielle conducted a similar session in March on Facebook which was also well recieved and provided great 'hands on' examples to those who attended.
In addition to her business, Danielle works for Impact Promotions. She is also the co-host of a weekly radio show on WCAP, 'Business Lunch with the Greater Lowell Chamber' and has recently begun teaching courses at Middlesex Community College on Social Media. Business Champion Breakfast - Thursday, May 26th
The annual Business Champion Breakfast was held on Thursday, May 26th and hosted by Cabot Corporation.
This years Business Champions are are Bob and Maria Reynolds from Dunkin Donuts. The couple owns / operates three local Dunkin Donuts and have generously supported many Billerica organizations and families during their 25+ years in town. Among those are Special Olympics, Cystic Fibrosis Fund, Billerica Police Athletic League, Billerica Girls Softball, Billerica Recreation, Billerica VFW, Friends of the Billerica COA, Billerica Lodge of Elks to name a few. They have also supported specific events sponsored by many organizations including the Billerica Fire Department, the William West Jr ALS Memorial Race, the Community Alliance, local churches and PTOs of several of the Billerica elementary schools.
In addition we also recognized Barbara Flaherty, Billerica Public Library Director who is retiring in June after 30 years of service to Billerica. Barbara's contributions to the town of Billerica over her tenure are numerous and she was a member of the board of this organization and President of it's predecessor the Billerica Plan.
Our guest speaker, Jack Clancy CEO of Enterprise Bank spoke about the bank, it's history and it's strong commitment to community. We were pleased that Jack could take the time to reinforce the theme of the Business Champion award in his remarks.
As always, the Cabot team prepared a wonderful breakfast buffet and provided an excellent forum for the event. Our sincere thanks goes to them for their assistance.
2011 Business Champions - Bob and Maria Reynolds
Our 2011 Business Champions are Bob and Maria Reynolds from Dunkin Donuts. Bob and Maria jointly own and operate three local Dunkin Donuts shops. Their generosity is well known to the many organizations and individuals they have supported over the years but is perhaps not as well known to the larger community.
Bob Reynolds is a native of Woburn Mass. He has been working since the age of twelve and prior to working for Dunkin Donuts he worked for a leasing company and as a truck mechanic. Bob’s wife Maria emigrated from the Azores to the US at the age of 3 and was raised in Somerville Mass. Maria also began working at a young age when she started helping her father Antonio who owned a Dunkin Donuts in Somerville. The family opened their original Billerica center location in 1986 and subsequently acquired the two additional Pinehurst locations in 1992 and 2001. Bob and Maria actually met while working at the Billerica Center shop and were married in 1989. The couple lives in Billerica and has three daughters Amanda, Savanah and Celine.
Bob and Maria have supported many Billerica organizations and families during their 25+ years in town.
Beyond this, the Reynolds family has also supported local families in their time of crisis with little notice or fanfare. There are numerous stories of their quiet and consistent generosity to families displaced by fires or suffering other misfortunes. Their commitment to this community has been described as selfless as well as inspiring, an assessment with which we agree.

This year's Sweetheart Dinner Dance was held last Thursday, February 10th at the Billerica Lodge of Elks. All of our guests enjoyed mucical entertainment provided by Curtis Knight as well
